Eighth COST Action ENTER Policy Brief published: An International Regulation of Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems: What Role for the EU?

The scientific progress in the domain of artificial intelligence (AI) represents a game-changer for our modern societies that raises significant ethical and legal concerns. In the military domain, the implementation of AI has led to the development of so-called lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS).

Numerous States have been participating in international negotiations to regulate these novel arms. The EU has also contributed, particularly within the framework of the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons stressing the centrality of human control in the development and use of LAWS, as well as the need for LAWS to comply with general international law.
