The webinar will present the exploratory research and an introductory overview of the elements relevant for mapping contestation of EU external relations. The research, which has been done by Elodie Thevenin, Antonio Karlović, and Dario Čepo, will be used as a springboard for an upcoming edited volume on the same topic. The focus will be on presenting the research into areas being contested among EU policy actors and to present potential blank spots that should be covered by future research. By using the toolbox developed through the work of leading contestation scholars, including the work done through this COST network, the research will showcase potential common theoretical frameworks and methods used so far, detect key arenas of contestations, and in the end analyze the views on contestation, positing that despite commonly referencing it as a negative phenomenon in the EU policy arena, sometimes contestation can be viewed in a positive light as well.
